Ford F-100, All Systems Dead
Q: When I turned the key
on my '81 Ford F-100 to start it, everything went dead. The battery is
charged and new, the voltage regulator, starter and solenoid are all new.
The next time I tried to start it everything went dead again and stayed
dead. What should I do short of selling it? Could it be a wire or fusible
link, or something in the ignition?
A:
Your problem could be a fusible link, but I'd be more suspicious of a
poor connection. Have you checked the condition of all of the battery
and starter cables? It's important that the connections are clean and
tight. One connection that is often overlooked is the ground cable's connection
on the engine. Electrical diagnostics on an '81 Ford F-100 is a stroll
in the clover field compared to today's vehicles. A seasoned technician
will probably be able to diagnose your problem for less than you have
spent on parts guessing what might be wrong. In no time at all, your old
Ford will be running like new.
