Jim Grant's Tech Tips
'00 Ford Windstar, Popping & Clunking Front-end
Q:
I hear a popping/clunk
noise from the front-end when turning my 2000 Ford Windstar. I heard
there is a TSB. Please advise on what to check.

A:
Before you get headed
off checking for Technical Service Bulletins I would suggest an inspection
of the front-end. When this noise occurs does the vehicle have to be moving
with the wheels turned? If this is the case, there may be a failing CV-joint.
Most of the time a CV-joint fails because the rubber boot, that holds
in the grease and keeps the water and dirt out, has broken. Once the grease
that lubricates the CV-joint is gone and the dirt and water start entering,
the life of the CV-joint is short lived. The only fix for this is replacing
the CV-joint. Worn and dry suspension parts can also create a wide variety
of front-end noises as well. Your vehicle is of the age that any of the
above and more could be happening. That is why I suggest a good inspection
before TSB hunting begins.
