Jim Grant's Tech Tips ‘95 Ford Windstar, Air bags Deployed Q: The air bags deployed in my ‘95 Ford Windstar at 25 mph while crossing a railroad crossing with no front impact. What could cause this?" - Rick Enright A: We had a Ford Escort towed into the shop not too long ago that had just about the same problem. The only difference was that the vehicle went off the road and landed just a little hard. The damage to the vehicle was negligible other than the air bags. The problem is at 25 mph a rough landing is enough to bounce the steel balls in the crash sensor. If the balls go bounce the bag goes boom! Most of the time it takes more than just a good bounce to get and air bag system to deploy. But a good landing is just about as close as an impact as far as the air bag system is concerned. So was that rail road crossing an every day 25 mph crossing? Is there more to this? If not there was something weird brewing with your air bag system and it is more than I can answer from this side of things.
