Jim Grant's Tech Tips '91 Honda Accord, Intermittent no Start
Q:
I have a problem with
my 91 Honda Accord. You can drive it and sometimes you can turn
it off and it won't start. The car can be hot or cold. It sounds like
it wants to start so it is not the starter and I had a tune-up and all...I'm
not sure where to go with it. I took it to work one day, and when I got
out it wouldn't start. Left the car there came back in and an hour later
it started. I asked a repair shop about it and they said, they can't do
anything with it until it stops all together. Any solutions?
A:
You may want to focus
your attention on a part called a Main Relay. This relay on Hondas
is known for being an intermittent problem that vanishes as the vehicle
gets near a repair facility. Have your technician show you where the Main
Relay is located. The next time your vehicle does not want to start give
the Main Relay a hit. If in doing so the vehicle springs back to life
replace the relay. The Main Relay on Hondas provides power for the
fuel pump, fuel injection and computer related components. About the only
thing you can do with a Honda with a bad Main Relay is push it.
