Lexus IS300, That light is killing me!
Q:
I own a 2001 Lexus IS300 and I recently installed an aftermarket intake
from Injen. After about 60 miles down the road the check engine light
came on and I already reset the ECU, so now I dont know what else
to do. Is there any way to fix this without spending more money on it?
-Jason
A:
You cant fix
anything until you know why the check engine light came on. For that answer
the computer has to be asked. The only way to ask the question is with
a scan tool that will connect to the OBD II diagnostic connector. If youre
going to be performing repairs or modification to your Lexus you may want
to consider purchasing a scan tool. There are two directions you can go.
For about $250 now you can get a basic OBD II scan tool. This tool will
allow you to read and clear codes, monitor some data stream info and has
some other functions. Its basically a tool that opens some windows
so you can have a look see of whats going on in the computer. If
you really want some diagnostic power then step up to a factory scan tool.
There is not enough space to explain the advantage of the factory scan
tool and software package. Lets put it this way, count the number
of computer controlled systems on your vehicle. Dont forget the
climate control, dash displays, transmission, anti-lock brakes, traction
control, air bags and the list goes on. Each one of these computer systems
can only be accessed by the factory scan tool and software. Because youll
only be working on your Lexus, there will be no need to buy up-dated software.
A factory tool and software opens the doors to the whole candy store and
should come in under $5000. If you want answers youll have to buy
the right tools or pay someone who has for the information you need to
repair you vehicle.
