01 Nissan Sentra, Check Engine Light W/code 1706 and 1491
Q:
I got in a car accident last month with my '01 Nissan Sentra. My car's front end had some damage at the bumper and fender. After the accident, the check engine light came on. The Body shop told me that the code was 1706 and 1491, which are not related to the accident. What does that mean? I found the car seems to lose power for a shot second, when the engine speed reaches 2000 and 4000/min. Also, the engine light is off for a short time. What is wrong with that? Does it relate to the codes?
A:
The computer code P1491 is an evaporative type code, which means the system/component in question aids in handling gasoline vapors from the gas tank. Most of these system components are located at the rear of the vehicle. The P1706 may or may not be related to the accident. This code is for a problem park neutral switch or circuit. The park neutral switch is located on the driver's side front of the transmission. This brings the question up just where was the vehicle hit? If the driver's side of the vehicle was involved it is possible that there is damage to some wiring or even to the switch if the damage went deep enough into the engine compartment. The evaporative type code rarely causes a driveability complaint. The code for the park neutral switch may be a different story. If the damage was more or less cosmetic, I could not relate the code to the accident. But, if the damage was more than skin deep a good looking into is in order
