DRIVEABILITY - SURGE ON ACCELERATION AT
1800-2500 RPM - ZX2 MODELS EQUIPPED WITH
MANUAL TRANSAXLE ONLY
FORD:
2001-2003 ESCORT ZX2
ISSUE
Some vehicles equipped with a manual transaxle, may exhibit a surge on light acceleration between 1800-2500 RPM. A revised Throttle Body assembly with increased throttle resistance has been developed to improve driver tactile feedback, along with a revised Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration to improve this condition.
ACTION
If the vehicle exhibits the described condition, replace Throttle Body and reprogram the PCM. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE INFORMATION
1.
Follow PC/ED Diagnostics for surge. If the Surge is still present after all diagnosis and service is performed as directed by the PC/ED, continue on to Step 2.
2.
Replace the Throttle Body assembly with Service Part 3S4Z-9E926-DA.
3.
Reprogram the PCM with WDS at the Software Version listed in the PCM Calibration chart, and Verify that the PCM Part Number updates to the calibration listed in the chart.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
